Jedoch ist Qualitätsmanagement, abgekürzt QM genannt ein moderner Begriff, der noch keine fünfzig Jahre alt ist. Der Anfang liegt in den komplexen Produkten in den USA aus dem militärischen Bereich und der Raumfahrt. Man erkannte, dass die Qualität solcher komplexen Produkte nach ihrer Fertigstellung oder nach ihrer Auslieferung mit einer Qualitätsprüfung nicht mehr vollständig erfasst und beurteilt werden kann. Oft kann man für die Funktion des Produkts wichtige Qualitätsmerkmale am fertigen Produkt nicht mehr prüfen, weil sie nicht mehr "zugänglich" sind. Auftraggeber solcher militärischer oder Raumfahrt-Produkte wollten nun durch Prüfung der Systematik und Verlässlichkeit ihrer qualitätsbezogenen Tätigkeiten bei den Produzenten und deren Zulieferanten herausbekommen, ob die jeweilige Qualitätsforderung erfüllt werden wird. Vor 35 Jahren entstand das erste Regelwerk für solche Qualitätsprüfungen im militärischen Bereich - genannt MIL-Q-9858 vom 9. April 1959. Qualitätsprüfungen der QM-Verfahren dieses 'Programms' nennt man heute 'Qualitätsaudit', das 'Programm' selbst hei t 'Qualitätsmanagementsystem'. (Zollondz 2001, S. 294f.) Qualität ist der Grad der Eignung, dem Verwendungszweck zu genügen. Erweitert auf das Qualitätsmanagement (QM) hei t diese Definition: Das Management hat die Eignung, das Unternehmen so zu gestalten und zu führen, dass es den Anforderungen, die heutige Märkte stellen, gerecht wird - d. h. das Unternehmen ist erfolgreich. (vgl. Zollondz 2001, S. 118)
