Leader Liu Jin, notes Aranda Vasserot, compared The Art of War to "a pile of pearls clinking in a dish"; for him, the book had no defined structure, but was a collection of sayings. Yet these sayings are arranged in a specific way and with a defined style, and the purpose of this annotated edition is to detect the thread that unites those pearls.
