Hier tut sich die Kluft auf zwischen der zielstrebigen, sachbezogenen Auffassung des Mannes, den wir als Praktiker bezeichnen, und derjenigen seines Gegenparts, der -zwar nicht minder einsatzfreudig - von Kompromis- sen in der Handhabung seiner Methoden nur ungern hort. Oft gelingt eine Ueberbruckung dieser Kluft, wenn namlich die Natur der Fragestellungen mit beiden Denkrichtungen vertraglich ist. Dann liegen ideale Verhaltnisse vor, die im Bereiche des Operations Research zu den klassischen Verfahren fUhren. Es ware jedoch falsch verstandene Philosophie des Operations Research, wollte man sich bei der Anwendung numerischer Methoden lediglich auf jene FaIle beschranken, wo aIle Voraussetzungen fUr einen mathematischen Spaziergang bestehen. Vielmehr muss es Aufgabe dieser noch jungen Disziplin sein, auch dort, wo die Gegebenheiten sich nicht so parademassig prasentieren, bei der sauberen Erarbeitung der gesuchten Losung einen Beitrag zu leisten. Hier er- offnet sich das in letzter Zeit immer starker beachtete Gebiet der heuristischen Methoden, die trotz ihrer im Vergleich zu strengeren Verfahren geringeren Eleganz gewisser faszinierender Eigenschaften nicht entbehren.
