A project is an endeavour to achieve some specific objectives, consists of a set of inter-related activities, technically conceived, involving use of resources in a systematic manner over a period of time. The success of a project is judged by its performance. This makes project management a challenging area for planners, policy makers as well as managers in business under competitive and globalized environment. The knowledge of the theory and practice of project management is essential in the grooming of managers in business and public administration. It, therefore, forms an essential course of study in Management, Engineering, Technology, Commerce, Accounting, and related professional courses. The present book has been developed with the object of exposing the scholars and the practitioners in these disciplines to a complete range of issues and applications in project environment and equip managers with the understanding of the fundamental concepts and practices in project management. The book explains the concepts supported with illustrations in simple language covering a wide range of theoretical as well as applied aspects of project management, which include project planning, project formulation, preparation of detailed project report, project appraisal, organization for project, project implementation, monitoring and control of activities, project evaluation, project review, etc. Essential pedagogical support has been provided in the book in the form of examples, review questions, exercises, and cases.
Professor K.R. Sharma, M.Com., Ph.D., joined as Lecturer in higher education in Rajasthan in July 1960 and retiring from Government College, Ajmer in May 1983, joined Mohanlal Sukhadia University, Udaipur, from where he retired as Professor, Chairman, Faculty of Commerce; Dean, College of Commerce and Management Studies; and Dean, Post Graduate Studies, in July 1999. Thereafter, he was UGC Visiting Professor at Maharishi Dayanand University, Ajmer (August 1999 - July 2000) and Head, Department of Commerce, Mizoram University, Aizawl (July 2002- July 2004).
On International assignments sponsored by Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, he served as Colombo Plan Professor of Business Administration at Institute of Management, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal (October 1986 to November 1987); Professor, Department of Accounting, Auditing, and Income Tax, University of Namibia, Windhoek (November 2010 to December 2013); and Visiting Professor, School of Post Graduate Studies, Kigali University, Kigali, Rwanda (January 8 to March 31, 2017). He has been conferred with Outstanding Researcher Award by Indian Accounting Research Foundation in 2016. He also visits on invitation to universities in India and abroad for guest lectures and seminars.
