The four comrades navigate the treacherous waters of court intrigue through daring escapades and perilous missions, as the powerful Cardinal Richelieu lurks in the shadows. First published in 1844, The Three Musketeers, Alexandre Dumas's swashbuckling classic, is a tale of loyalty, friendship and adventure, an epic cherished by generations for its storytelling and beloved characters.
Alexandre Dumas (1802–1870) was a French novelist celebrated for his adventurous tales and rich storytelling. Born in Villers-Cotterêts, France, Dumas was the son of a general in Napoleon's army and studied in a military academy. After his father’s death, he came to Paris to make a living as a lawyer and ended up working for Duke d’Orléans, the future King Louis-Philippe. He tried his hand at theatre, eventually becoming acquainted with the young poets who would lead the Romantic movement. His first successful play, Henry III and His Court premiered in 1829 and established Dumas as a rising star in the French theatre scene. After multiple successful plays, he moved towards writing historical novels and establishing his own production house. His works often explored themes of justice, vengeance, and the struggle against oppression, reflecting the tumultuous political and social landscape of nineteenth-century France. Dumas encountered financial difficulties multiple times in his life due to his tendency to live extravagantly, often spending more than he earned. In his lifetime, he met multiple eminent personalities and published over 1,000,000 pages, with his novels being adapted into almost 200 films. He passed away at the age of 68.
