"Vermello im Fundb�ro" ist der bewegende Abschluss einer langen, aufregenden Reise. Nach all den Abenteuern in Teuropia, Athen, hoch �ber den Wolken und an fremden Orten landet der rote Kater diesmal unsanft in einer Welt, die ihm fremd und bedrohlich erscheint: im Fundb�ro eines Flughafens. Die Geschichte beginnt damit, dass Vermello nach seiner Flugzeug-Odyssee in Wien ankommt. Er steckt in einem halbgeschlossenen Koffer, aus dem er sich nicht rechtzeitig befreien kann. Flughafenpersonal entdeckt ihn, und pl�tzlich wird er nicht mehr als neugieriger Abenteurer gesehen, sondern als "Fundsache", die niemand vermisst. Hinter den T�ren des Fundb�ros findet er sich zwischen verlorenen Gegenst�nden, vergessenen Koffern und herrenlosen Dingen wieder. F�r den Kater, der so viel erlebt hat, ist das ein bitterer Moment. Er f�hlt sich verlassen, einsam und �berfl�ssig. Niemand scheint auf ihn zu warten, niemand ruft nach ihm. Kinder sp�ren in diesen Szenen die Traurigkeit und k�nnen sich leicht in Vermellos Gef�hle hineinversetzen. Erwachsene erkennen dahinter das Thema "Zugeh�rigkeit" - das Bed�rfnis, ein Zuhause und Menschen zu haben, die einen lieben. Doch wie es in Vermellos Leben immer war, bleibt auch hier die Hoffnung. Denn w�hrend er fast den Mut verliert, treten zwei vertraute Menschen auf: Juri Lettermann und Grete Hummel. Sie haben Vermello nie vergessen, sie haben gesucht, gehofft und sich gefreut, ihn endlich wiederzufinden. F�r Vermello bedeutet das die R�ckkehr ins Gl�ck.
