James Joyce’s Ulysses, a landmark of modernist literature, takes place over a single day—16 June 1904—in Dublin, as Leopold Bloom journeys through the city. Drawing structural inspiration from Homer’s Odyssey, Joyce reimagines classical figures in a modern context: Bloom as Odysseus, Molly as Penelope, and Stephen Dedalus as Telemachus. Through the innovative use of stream-of-consciousness narrative, Ulysses delves into the intricate inner lives of its characters, exploring themes of identity, time, memory, and the ordinary made extraordinary. First published in 1922, the novel’s layered language, literary allusions, and stylistic experimentation challenged conventions and redefined the possibilities of fiction. Its wit, depth, and humanity have secured its place as one of the most influential literary works ever written.

“…most important contribution that has been made to fictional literature in the 20th century.”

—The New York Times"

James Joyce (1882–1941) was an Irish novelist, poet and critic regarded as the most influential literary figure of the twentieth century. Born into a Catholic family in Dublin as the eldest of 10 surviving children, Joyce's early life was marked by financial struggles due to his father's negligence. While at University College, he immersed himself in literature and developed a keen interest in Thomas Aquinas and Henrik Ibsen. He was determined to become a writer, which led him to write book reviews and short stories as he embarked on his first major work, Stephen Hero. Joyce's life took a significant turn when he met Nora Barnacle in 1904, leading to their departure from Dublin. They lived in various European cities, including Pola, Trieste and Rome, where he worked at a bank. Financial difficulties plagued Joyce, but he continued his literary pursuits, and in 1915, during World War I, he moved to Zürich, supported by grants from patrons like Edith Rockefeller McCormick and Harriet Shaw Weaver. Despite battling eye diseases and undergoing numerous operations, Joyce maintained his spirits and initially published his first major novel, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, in the US due to difficulties finding an English printer. Ulysses similarly faced bans in December 1920; however, by that time, Joyce had earned acclaim for his groundbreaking style and exploration of intellectual and emotional development. Even now, his literary legacy endures as he continues to be recognised for his contribution to twentieth-century literature, pushing boundaries and challenging conventional narrative forms.
