"Looking-glass, Looking-glass, on the wall, Who in this land is the fairest of all?”

Inspired by German folklore and first published in 1812 as Kinder- und Hausmärchen, Grimm's Fairy Tales are the most beloved and influential fairy tales in literary history. From Rapunzel's magical golden locks and mysterious riddles of Rumpelstiltskin to the poisonous apple of Snow White and the daring escapades of Hansel and Gretel, The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales consists of a collection of over 200 short stories that have mesmerised readers for centuries. The original stories are darker, unlike the famous editions many readers grew up with, and often don't have happy endings—but they're far more interesting. The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales includes the original versions of all our childhood favourites, with their eerie charm and grim allure intact.

“The stories of the Brothers Grimm have been read at bedsides…all over the world.”

—The Guardian

“…the tales of the Brothers Grimm are indeed grim.”

—The New York Times

Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Carl Grimm (1786–1859) were born in Hanau, Hesse-Kassel. Following their father's demise while they were kids, their mother struggled to sustain their education and expenses. Their aunt was the lady of the chamber to the Landgravine of Hesse, and she helped to support and educate the family. Jacob was sent to the public school at Kassel in 1798 with his younger brother Wilhelm. In 1802, he went to the University of Marburg where he studied law, a profession for which he had been intended by his father. His brother joined him at Marburg a year later, having just recovered from a severe illness, and likewise began the study of law. Jacob Grimm became inspired by the lectures of Friedrich Carl von Savigny, a noted expert on Roman law. Wilhelm Grimm, in the preface to the Deutsche Grammatik (German Grammar), credits Savigny with giving the brothers an awareness of science. Between 1812 and 1857, their first collection was revised and republished many times, growing from 86 stories to more than 200. Wilhelm passed away at the age of 73 from an infection, and Jacob, who became a recluse after his brother’s death, later passed away at the age of 78.

Noteworthy works by the Grimm brothers include:
  • Altdeutsche Wälder (Old German Forests) (1813–1816)
  • Der arme Heinrich von Hartmann von der Aue (Poor Heinrich by Hartmann von der Aue) (1815)
