Published in 1759, The Theory of Moral Sentiments provides a philosophical framework for Adam Smith's later works, including The Wealth of Nations (1776). The book showcases his interest in the human virtue of benevolence, contrary to his image of a pure rationalist. Smith argues that while it is good to put self-interest first to meet basic human needs, the ultimate goal of all human beings should be to lead a morally virtuous life. He expands on David Hume's thoughts on sympathy, advancing it to a theory of imagination. This leads to his revolutionary ideas on conscience, virtue and moral judgment. Smith's unique contribution lies in his reshaping the enlightenment idea of moral or social science and incorporating it with political economy. His innovative ideas continue to challenge and introduce readers to new ways of thinking about the world.

Adam Smith (1723–1790) was a Scottish economist and philosopher. An important figure in the Scottish Enlightenment, he is seen by many as “The Father of Economics” or “The Father of Capitalism”. His classic works include The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776) which is often considered his masterpiece. Smith studied social philosophy at the University of Glasgow and Balliol College, Oxford. After finishing his studies, he gave a series of public lectures at the University of Edinburgh. Smith later became a professor of moral philosophy at Glasgow, during which time he wrote and published The Theory of Moral Sentiments. In his later years, he accepted a tutoring position, which allowed him to travel across Europe and engage with other prominent intellectuals of the time. His ideas laid the groundwork for classical free market economic theory. The Wealth of Nations was a forerunner to modern economics. In the book, Smith introduced concepts such as the division of labour and discussed how competition and rational self interest can result in economic prosperity. Although his ideas were often controversial, even in his own day, his work has earned him recognition as one of the most influential figures in economics and continues to influence economic policies and theories.
