Noventa y nueve ovejas miran, pero permanecen donde están; la oveja número cien, la más joven y estimada, da un salto y desaparece en pos del tentador. El pastor la llama pero va más veloz que el viento para tratar de alcanzar al que ha pasado. Para mantenerse durante la carrera, gusta aquella sal, ese le produce un extraño delirio que la abrasa que hace que los pobres ovejas anhela para las aguas fria de la selva. Y siguiendo el tentador se adentra en el bosque y trepa y baja y cae... una, dos, tres veces; cada vez, siente alrededor de su cuello el legamoso abrazo de los reptiles et sediento, bebe aguas contaminadas; et hambriento, come hierbas brillantes por las repugnantes babas que las cubren. El pastor bueno deja cerradas en lugar seguro a las noventa y nueve fieles y se pone en camino y no se detiene hasta que encuentra huellas de la oveja perdida. Él lo llama en voz alta, pidiendo pidiendo el viento para llevar a su llamado a ella y la ve desde lejos, ebria, atrapada entre las roscas de los reptiles, tan ebria que no se siente nostalgia por el hombre que ama, antes bien lo injuria. Mas embargo, el pastor no se cansa siguiendo sus huellas y llorando cuando los pierde; mechones de lana, pedazos de alma; huellas de sangre, delitos diversos; porquerías, pruebas de su lujuria, pero él sigue y alcanza. Ah, te he encontrado, amada! Te he alcanzado! Cuánto camino he recorrido por ti, para conducirte de nuevo al redil! No agaches la frente humillada. Tu pecado está sepultado en mi corazón.
