Inside you'll find art activities that cover the life of surgeons in detail: their clothes, cars, meetings, clinics, operating theatres, and interactions with patients and secretaries. I am a consultant vascular surgeon with long experience in the management of all aspects of vascular diseases such as diabetic foot disease, aortic surgery and varicose vein treatments. I grew up in the city of Damascus, Syria, where I received my medical school degree and a higher degree in general and trauma surgery. I then moved to the UK where I was fully trained in vascular (arteries and veins) surgery and in endovascular (key hole) surgery. I am currently a practising consultant in the NHS and the chief surgeon in the Surrey and London AJLyon clinic (ajlyon.co.uk). I first became interested in medical art when I started dissecting the human body during my time at medical school. I believed that scientific knowledge of human anatomy could only be gained by dissecting and then sketching the human body with the highest accuracy possible. I then became deeply interested in Leonardo De Vinci's work and his abilities to express the beauty and delicacy of the human body and organs. During my surgical training, I began to see pen-and ink drawing as a scientific activity, in which every effect (lines, shades, and perspectives) should be based on the ability of the surgeon to perform a beautiful and successful operation. The surgical drawing would therefore reveal the emotions of the surgeon as much as it does reveal the beauty of the surgical repair and the drama of the scene. This simple colouring book reveals this drama in the surgeon's life, and is meant to be plain and simple. I hope you will find it useful and enjoyable, and you will gain some insight into the drama of the surgeon's life.
