Un lugar donde vivir narra las peripecias de un grupo de personas que ansían vivir en armonía en un lugar preferido. Nuestra historia empieza con la llegada de la maestra Eleonora Mancuso a Manducal, que desencadena, en el lugar donde ha sido enviada para ejercer su profesión, una serie de hechos, algunos criminales, hasta entonces ocultos. El conocimiento de la pequeña Alba, una de sus alumnas, dará inicio a una serie de averiguaciones que la llevará a conocer en parte la idiosincrasia de los habitantes de la ciudad, que recelosos no aportan nada de concreto a su empeño de averiguar la verdad respecto a la niña que ha adoptado con inusitado afecto. Al contrario, lo agravan. Finalmente, su tenacidad obtiene el resultado anhelado. En sus pesquisas descubre que Atanasia Notrica es la madre de un asesino y su conexión con elementos pertenecientes al hampa común por medio de los cuales aspira la consecución de una herencia que no le corresponde. Durante las noches de insomnio llegan al oído de la maestra los hechos más escabrosos e inimaginables. Siente miedo y busca por todos los medios mudarse de la residencia propiedad de la Notrica. Pero es otra la preocupación apremiante derivada del secreto que mantiene en ascuas a dos de los principales protagonistas; la madre de la maestra, Adalgisa Ferrer y el juez de paz Jorge Rodríguez Peña. El secreto que la joven Eleonora ignora y que al ser revelado cambiaría el rumbo de su vida. Con el progreso llega a Manducal las propuestas políticas y de reivindicaciones; los dirigentes políticos de los varios partidos se preparan para un referéndum, es así que surgen las hostilidades entre los habitantes, hasta entonces pacíficos; los correspondientes desafíos, junto a los infundios y las calumnias que juegan un papel importante entre los electores, pero al final terminarán dando su apoyo al candidato de su preferencia. Una gitana, la principal protagonista en la vida de la maestra, se presentará en Manducal, provocando el pánico en la persona que la maestra cree sea su madre. La gitana que entregó la niña vuelta una mujer y que aspira conocer. Al cabo de una denodada búsqueda la gitana Paola, descubre el lugar donde puede encontrar a la niña hecha mujer. La señora Adalgisa se desespera, será el juez el que va a tranquilizarla y convencerla que debe aceptar una verdad que más temprano que tarde verá la luz. Pero al término de innumerables intentos para ocultar la verdad, la misma queda sometida a un juramento inviolable hecho por la gitana Paola; al final, todo sigue igual, en donde todos anhelan tener "un lugar donde vivir".
