His works include Sounding Out the City: Personal Stereos and the Management of Everyday life (2000) and Sound Moves: iPod Culture and Urban Experience (2007) He has just completed a monograph on Sirens and is presently writing a monograph on Reinterpreting the Sounds of World War 1. He is the co-founding editor of the journals Senses and Society and Sound Studies (both with Routledge) and is editor of the book series The Study of Sound.
