The book discusses business intelligence (BI) and Big Data (BD) issues in the context of modern management paradigms and organizational success. It presents a theoretically and empirically grounded investigation into BI and BD application in organizations and examines such issues as:

  • Analysis and interpretation of the essence of BI and BD

  • Decision support

  • Potential areas of BI and BD utilization in organizations

  • Factors determining success with using BI and BD

  • The role of BI and BD in value creation for organizations

  • Identifying barriers and constraints related to BI and BD design and implementation

The book presents arguments and evidence confirming that BI and BD may be a trigger for making more effective decisions, improving business processes and business performance, and creating new business. The book proposes a comprehensive framework on how to design and use BI and BD to provide organizational success.

Celina M. Olszak is a professor of Computer Science and Management Information Systems. She received an MSc in Computer Science from Wroclaw University of Science and Technology and was awarded PhD and a title of professor in Management Information Systems from　the University of Economics in Katowice. Currently, she is the chair of the Department of Business Informatics and a president of the Management and Quality Research Committee at the University of Economics in Katowice.

Olszak is the author of 15 books and more than 300 research papers. Her research focuses on decision support systems, knowledge management, management information systems, design of management information systems, business intelligence systems, big data, artificial intelligence as well as organizational creativity, innovation, and digital economy. She is a member of the Informing Science Institute in the USA, PGV Nework (Pays du Groupe De Vysegrad), Canadian Centre of Science and Education, the American Research Foundation's Centre for European and Middle Eastern Studies, the Polish Academy of Sciences, as well as a member of many committees of international scientific conferences and journals.
