Antes que nada -comienza diciendo este libro- ahora tiene entre sus manos un volumen dedicado a la semiótica, la estética y la teoría crítica del diseño, tanto de sus productos como de sus procesos. Es un saber común en el mundo del diseño que existe una suerte de ciencia de los signos, normalmente denominada semiótica (o todavía, semiología), que habiendo tomado como punto de partida el portentoso desarrollo de los estudios del lenguaje a lo largo de los últimos cien años, promete una mejor comprensión no sólo de los productos del diseño sino también de sus acciones, de sus procedimientos y -probablemente- de sus metodologías (las que sirven para tomar decisiones de diseño). En este sentido, este es un libro adecuado tanto para aquellos que quieren enterarse -de primera mano- qué es el diseño, como para aquellos otros que, siendo parroquianos o profesionales de esta disciplina, desean afrontar el desafío de conocerla en profundidad.
