Connu pendant le Directoire et notamment sous l'Empire pour ses succès de scandale et pour sa posture rebelle qui en fait une victime privilégiée de la censure, Népomucène Louis Lemercier fait représenter le 7 mars 1809 à l'Odéon son Christophe Colomb, pièce qu'il définit comme une comédie shakespearienne . Sans renoncer à l'alexandrin, qu'il plie et défigure, Lemercier crée un ouvrage dont l'action se déplace d'Espagne en Amérique et requiert l'installation d'un bateau sur la scène. Après les désordres qui font suite aux spectacles - le sang coulait dans le parterre de l'Odéon, lit-on dans un témoignage tardif - se crée autour de la pièce de Lemercier une légende qui dure au moins jusqu'aux années 1830, et les tumultes provoqués par Christophe Colomb ont été décrits par la critique moderne comme une bataille d'Hernani avant la lettre. Auteur actif de la Révolution à la Monarchie de Juillet, académicien érudit et adversaire de Victor Hugo, Lemercier est donc l'inventeur - avec Pinto et Christophe Colomb - du genre de la comédie historique, protoforme de drame romantique. Pourtant, aux hardiesses déjà romantiques de l'auteur s'oppose sa haine envers les représentants de la nouvelle école et la mode des théâtres étrangers. L'esthétique métissée de Lemercier et de sa comédie shakespearienne sont bien révélatrices d'une ambigüité caractéristique de la difficile transition entre Lumières et Romantisme.
