Dans le contexte littéraire élisabéthain et jacobéen, fortement imprégné de l'art oratoire de l'Antiquité, l'oeuvre de William Shakespeare est marquée par l'idéal rhétorique d'abondance ou copia, rendue célèbre par Erasme à la Renaissance. Si le dramaturge célèbre la copia qui envahit tous les genres oratoires, l'espace public du forum comme l'espace privé de l'alcôve, et jusqu'aux minutieuses descriptions (ekphraseis) incrustées dans la trame de l'oeuvre dramatique, il en dénonce aussi les limites et les excès. La copia peut alors s'inverser en loquacitas ou prolixité vide. Son oeuvre est également traversée par la double thématique de l'abondance et de la vacuité. L'instabilité de cette profusion se manifeste à travers la subversion du mythe de l'âge d'or, le renversement de la cornucopia en tonneau des Danaïdes et le jeu sur la figure du silène platonicien. Entre la pompe et le néant, l'oeuvre de Shakespeare, inscrite dans la crise épistémologique qui touche l'Angleterre et l'Europe à la fin du 16e et au début du 17e siècle, correspond à un point d'inflexion esthétique qui inverse les polarités et fait de l'abondance le masque de la vacuité.

L'auteur: Ancienne élève de l'ENS Fontenay / Saint Cloud, Laetitia Coussement-Boillot est agrégée d'anglais et maître de conférences en littérature anglaise des 16e et 17e siècles à l'Université Paris 7-Denis Diderot. Elle a coordonné des ouvrages sur Shakespeare (Richard II et Coriolanus) et a également co-traduit Coriolan. Elle travaille sur la rhétorique à l'époque élisabéthaine et jacobéenne et a co-dirigé un recueil d'articles sur la rhétorique du silence.
