About The Book

Costa's Daughter is a novel written by Konrad Bercovici. The book tells the story of a young woman named Maria Costa, who is the daughter of a wealthy and powerful man named Don Costa. Maria is raised in luxury and privilege, but she is also stifled by her father's overprotective nature.As Maria grows older, she begins to rebel against her father's control and seeks out a life of her own. She falls in love with a young man named Mario, who is a struggling artist. Don Costa disapproves of the relationship and tries to break them apart.Despite her father's objections, Maria continues to see Mario and eventually becomes pregnant. Don Costa is furious and disowns his daughter, leaving her to fend for herself. Maria struggles to make a life for herself and her child, facing poverty and discrimination along the way.The novel is set in the early 20th century, and it explores themes of love, family, class, and identity. It is a powerful story of a young woman's journey to find her own path in life, despite the obstacles in her way.1923. Often identified through his association with Charlie Chaplin and the credit dispute over authorship of the screenplay for The Great Dictator, the Romanian-born Bercovici was a gypsy and wrote several novels and stories about gypsy culture. His play, Costa's Daughter, opens in a valley of the Carpathian Mountains on a spring afternoon and follows the fortunes of the Gypsy Costa and his daughter Marga.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
