This story is both fictional and factual. It was written to reflect the times of the decade. Gino has returned home after serving six years in the US Navy. His parents own a wealthy cattle ranch. Gino must decide if he wishes to take over. Leaving Oregon on a long vacation he comes to Sutter County, which is between Yuba City and Sacramento, California. It is a small rural community. There is a Bar and Tavern called "Dingville" and such a place did exist at one time. Most individuals would say it was a red neck bar and tavern in the middle of the farming belt of Sutter County. The event takes place back in the early 70's. The book focuses on diversity, making use of your resources, trusting others, confidentality and working as a team rather than a leader. Making use of what tools are available to you to do the job. Be creative with what you have. It does have some violence and profanity, however, it's very limited. By the time you finish this book, it's hopeful you will have a better perception of others. It's not about money, drugs and/or sex. It's about veterans of Vietnam, illegal immigrants, and/or disabled individuals. In almost everyone's lives there is a time, when they wish they could go back, "Just one more time". If I could have been the hero at the time, would this be the story I would want to tell? If so, when did it all start? Was it when the farms were being taken over by coporations? Has it become a cooperate virus. Is this what Vietnam was all about? Who owns America? Big business? Has the virus taking over the freedom of individuals and the American dream?

Born with a profound neurosensory hearing loss, Rodney Keeney obtained a B.A. in Organizational Communications and an M.S. degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling. He was raised in Sutter County and worked on the Hawk Ranch during the summers, when he wasn't working on his parents' farm. Cowboy in the Sand is based in part on his life and is his first novel.
