Foggerty's Fairy is a novel written by W. S. Gilbert, the famous British playwright and librettist of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. The book tells the story of a middle-aged, unmarried man named Foggerty who is visited by a fairy godmother named Zephyrus. Zephyrus offers to grant Foggerty three wishes, but warns him that each wish will come with unintended consequences. Foggerty decides to wish for wealth, love, and fame, but quickly realizes that his wishes have caused more problems than they have solved. He becomes rich, but is constantly pursued by gold diggers; he falls in love, but the object of his affection is already engaged; and he becomes famous, but his newfound celebrity causes him to lose touch with his friends and family. Throughout the novel, Gilbert uses satire and humor to comment on the societal pressures surrounding wealth, love, and fame, and the dangers of blindly pursuing these things without considering their true value. The book ultimately serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of wishing for things without fully understanding their consequences.REBECCA [looking at FOGGERTY]. Well, it's about time to wake him. Poor fellow, he little thinks how materially his acquaintance with Miss Spiff has affected his subsequent adventures! Now that he has obliterated her and all the complicated consequences that came of his having known her, he won't know whether he's on his head or his heels. I'm really rather sorry for him. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
