Drame relatant l'affaire de la tour de Nesle dont voici la trame historique. Philippe le Bel a quatre enfants, dont trois fils qui vont lui succéder au trône de France, respectivement Louis X le Hutin, Philippe V le Long et Charles IV le Bel, qu'il marie avec trois princesses. En 1305, Louis épouse Marguerite de Bourgogne (12901315), la fille du duc de Bourgogne. Philippe épouse Jeanne de Bourgogne, la première fille de Mahaut d'Artois, en 1306. Enfin, Charles épouse Blanche de Bourgogne, la deuxième fille de Mahaut d'Artois, en 1308. Très liées entre elles, les princesses font souffler un vent de gaieté et de charme sur la cour austère du Roi. Leur élégance et leur coquetterie font bientôt naître une rumeur destructrice. Elles sont soupçonnées de recevoir des jeunes gens. Toutefois, aucune preuve ne vient étayer ces accusations et les princesses poursuivent leur joyeuse vie. La visite à Paris du roi d'Angleterre Édouard II et de sa femme Isabelle, fille de Philippe le Bel, au début de l'année 1314, sonne le glas de leurs beaux jours. Philippe le Bel donne plusieurs fêtes en l'honneur de ses hôtes. Au cours de l'une d'elles, Isabelle remarque que deux chevaliers portent à la ceinture des aumônières semblables à celles qu'elle a offertes personnellement quelques mois plus tôt à deux de ses belles-soeurs, Marguerite et Blanche. Elle s'empresse de signaler les frères Gauthier et Philippe d'Aunay à son père. Le roi ordonne une enquête qui confirme les faits. Arrêtés, les frères d'Aunay résistent à la question, puis ils finissent par avouer, suivis de Marguerite et de Blanche. Sous la torture, les deux chevaliers auraient avoué leurs relations avec les princesses, qui duraient depuis trois ans. Philippe d'Aunay est l'amant de Marguerite et son frère Gauthier est l'amant de Blanche.
