About The Book

Sganarelle Or The Self-Deceived Husband is a play written by the French playwright, Moliere, also known as Jean Baptiste Poquelin. The play was first performed in 1660 and revolves around the character of Sganarelle, a middle-aged man who is married to a much younger woman, Martine. Sganarelle is convinced that his wife is unfaithful and seeks the advice of various characters, including a quack doctor and a philosopher, in order to prove his suspicions. However, each of these characters only serves to confuse Sganarelle further and ultimately leads to his own downfall. The play is a satirical comedy that critiques the hypocrisy and foolishness of the upper classes in 17th century France. Sganarelle Or The Self-Deceived Husband is considered to be one of Moliere's most popular and enduring works and is still performed today in both French and English-speaking countries.SGAN.
