Suppressed Desires is a comedic play written by Susan Glaspell. The play is divided into two episodes, each of which explores the theme of suppressed desires. The first episode centers around the character of Henrietta, a woman who is interested in psychoanalysis and dreams of becoming a therapist. Her husband, Stephen, is a practical man who is skeptical of her interest in psychoanalysis. However, her attempts to analyze Stephen's dream only lead to misunderstandings and confusion.The second episode focuses on the character of Mabel, a woman who is bored with her life as a housewife. She dreams of adventure and excitement, but feels trapped in her mundane existence. When her husband, George, invites a friend over for dinner, Mabel sees an opportunity to inject some excitement into her life. She flirts with the friend, but her attempts to seduce him are ultimately unsuccessful.Throughout the play, Glaspell uses humor to explore the ways in which people suppress their desires and the consequences of doing so. The play also touches on themes of gender roles, marriage, and the search for personal fulfillment.
