The Devil's Disciple is a play written by George Bernard Shaw that was first published in 1901. The play is set during the American Revolution and follows the story of Richard Dudgeon, a man who is seen as a rebellious outcast in his community. When the British army arrives in town, Dudgeon is mistaken for a local minister and is arrested in place of the real minister. He is then sentenced to be hanged, but a series of events lead to his escape and he becomes a hero of the American Revolution. Along the way, Dudgeon meets and falls in love with Judith Anderson, the daughter of a wealthy family who is engaged to a man she does not love. The play explores themes of rebellion, morality, and love, and is known for its witty dialogue and satirical commentary on society.RICHARD (seriously). Because it's true. I was brought up in the other service; but I knew from the first that the Devil was my natural master and captain and friend. I saw that he was in the right, and that the world cringed to his conqueror only through fear. I prayed secretly to him; and he comforted me, and saved me from having my spirit broken in this house of children's tears. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
