The Octoroon is a play written by Dion Boucicault, first performed in 1859. The play is set in Louisiana and explores themes of race, identity, and love. The main character, Zoe, is an octoroon (a person of one-eighth black ancestry) who is raised as a free woman by her white father. She falls in love with a white man, George, but their relationship is complicated by the racial tensions of the time. Meanwhile, a wealthy plantation owner, Jacob McCloskey, is determined to marry Zoe for her inheritance. The play features a cast of colorful characters, including a scheming slave trader and a Native American warrior. The Octoroon was a groundbreaking work for its time, as it was one of the first plays to address the issue of slavery and race in America.
