The School for Wives is a play written by French playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known by his stage name Moliere. The play was first performed in 1662 and is considered one of Moliere's most famous works. The plot revolves around a wealthy man named Arnolphe who is determined to marry a young, innocent girl named Agnes. Arnolphe has spent years carefully grooming Agnes to be the perfect wife, and he believes that she is completely devoted to him. However, Arnolphe's plans are thrown into disarray when a young man named Horace falls in love with Agnes and begins to court her. As the play unfolds, Arnolphe's attempts to control Agnes become increasingly desperate and absurd. Meanwhile, Horace and Agnes fall deeper in love, and Arnolphe is forced to confront the fact that he may have been wrong about love and relationships all along. The School for Wives is a classic example of French comedy, with its witty dialogue, exaggerated characters, and satirical take on societal norms. It explores themes of love, marriage, and the power dynamics between men and women in 17th century France.I declare I cannot rest anywhere; my mind is troubled by a thousand cares, thinking how to contrive, both indoors and out, so as to frustrate the attempts of this coxcomb.
