About The Book

The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd is a play that was first performed in the late 16th century. The story revolves around the character of Hieronimo, a Spanish nobleman who seeks revenge for the murder of his son, Horatio. The play is a classic example of the revenge tragedy genre, which was popular in Elizabethan England.The play opens with the ghost of Don Andrea, a Spanish nobleman who has been killed in battle by the Portuguese. His ghost appears to his friend Horatio and tells him that he was betrayed by Balthazar, the son of the Portuguese Viceroy. Horatio vows to avenge his friend's death and sets out to kill Balthazar.Meanwhile, Hieronimo is grieving over the loss of his son, who was also killed in battle. He is visited by the ghost of his son, who tells him that he was murdered by Lorenzo, the nephew of the Spanish King. Hieronimo decides to seek revenge and sets out to find the killer.The play is full of intrigue, murder, and betrayal. Hieronimo's quest for revenge leads him down a dark path, and he becomes consumed by his desire for vengeance. The play's climax features a dramatic showdown between Hieronimo and the killers of his son, which ultimately ends in tragedy.The Spanish Tragedy is considered a masterpiece of Elizabethan drama and has influenced many later works, including Shakespeare's Hamlet.
