Dr. RM.Manickavasagam, Retired Professor from Earth Sciences and Institute Instrumentation Center, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) , Roorkee, started his teaching career for undergraduate students of geology in one of the University college in Tamil Nadu for about six years. During that time he taught various geology subjects including theory, practical and field training. Later after obtaining the doctoral degree in geology, he moved to IIT, where he taught post graduate students and guided Ph.D scholars in the specialized field of metamorphic petrology, ore geology and geochemistry for more than two decades. Due to his vast experience in theoretical and practical knowledge in these subjects, the book is written comprehensively for the benefit of geology students.

This book is written for undergraduate and postgraduate geology students who can get the basic knowledge in metamorphic petrology both in theoretical and field aspects. By studying this book, the students should be able to read themselves and understand the subject without difficulty.
After brief introduction in chapter 1, the tectonic settings and physical conditions are briefed in chapter 2. Various types of metamorphism and classical metamorphic areas of study are given in chapters 3 and 4. Mineral paragenesis in metamorphic rocks and the composition of parent rocks that undergo metamorphism are discussed in chapters 5 and 6. All possible metamorphic reactions are described in chapter 7. The concept of facies is given shortly in chapter8. Phase rule and its application in the construction of various chemographic diagrams are discussed in chapter 9. Chapter 10 deals with metamorphism of basic rocks in various facies conditions, and the mineral reactions responsible for producing various mineral parageneisis in each facies, In the same way, chapters 11 deals with metamorphism of pelitic rocks. Some information is also given about the importance of petrogenetic grid in this chapter. Chapter 12 deals with impure calcareous rocks in which the mineral reactions and petrogenesis are explained with experimental data. The basics of thermodynamics, its application to metamorphic, and P-T determination are given in chapter 13. The relevance of P-T-t path in metamorphism is explained very briefly in Chpater14. Chapter 15 is exclusively devoted to hand specimen metamorphic rocks with the intention that it may be used as field guide. The structure and texture of metamorphic rocks are given in last chapter.
