The focus of the book is on mega cities, often called engines of economic growth. Mega cities constitute major assets of the countries, at the same time they are also centres of major convulsions. The book contains chapters on South Asia's nine mega cities − Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad (in India), Karachi, and Lahore (in Pakistan), and Dhaka (in Bangladesh). In addition, five capital cities of the region, i.e., Kabul (Afghanistan), Kathmandu (Nepal), Thimphu (Bhutan), Colombo (Sri Lanka), and Male (Maldives) also constitute the subject matter of the book.

The volume consists of eighteen chapters; four chapters (three in the beginning and one at the end) cover the general themes that cut across all the countries of the Region; the remaining fourteen chapters focus on each of the nine mega cities and five capital cities of the Region. Each chapter is an original research work of a well-known specialist from fields like urban geography, urban planning, urban management, architecture and social science.
