Education, training and skill development of our youth are gaining momentum considering massive expansion in the capacity building of Engineering Colleges, Technical Institutes, Polytechnics, ITIs and Vocational Training Centres. But qualitative improvement of technically trained personnel, which is equally important and desirable, has not come about to the level required.
Small, micro, medium and large scale engineering, technology and manufacturing industries, and extensive infrastructure development taking place in our country need adequately trained engineers and skilled personnel with necessary knowledge and competencies to meet domestic demand and do well in export competitiveness. This will overcome manpower shortage in academia, science, technology, R&D, and industries.
In this context, National Skill Development Programme as well as instructional sources, materials and books, especially prepared for use by the technical personnel assume great significance. This book explains various machine shop technology processes, including safety in machine shop; lathe operations; drilling, reaming and tapping; milling and milling machines; boring, broaching and grinding; jigs and fixtures; microfinishing processes; machine shop measuring devices; robotics and computer-aided processes; planning, product development cycle; and the impact of innovations on production, among others.
Various processes have been explained in a lucid manner for easy understanding of the readers. The book contains a large number of labelled diagrams of machines, tools and parts. Besides explanations of operations, there are objective-type questions in each chapter with Answer Keys to help the students. A glossary of technical terms has been provided at the end.
The book will be useful for machine operators, technical trainees, students of engineering, shop floor supervisors, and engineers engaged in industrial operations.
