He was awarded a CBE for his contributions to the study of memory and is a Fellow of the Royal Society, of the British Academy, of the Academy of Medical Sciences and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His outstanding record of personal achievements and significant contributions to the advancement of psychological knowledge were recognised in 2001 by the American Psychological Association Distinguished Contribution Award, in 2012 by the Lifetime Achievement Award of the British Psychological Society and in 2016 by the International Union of Psychological Sciences Award for Major Achievement in Psychological Science.
