This book presents English translations of the award-winning essays included in Okayamakko: The 60th Anniversary Collection. Written by junior high school students in Okayama, these works are accompanied by the editor's commentaries. The original volume was published in 2012 by the Okayama Teachers' Union and the Editorial Committee of Okayamakko. In these essays, students reflect on their families, friendships, the natural world, and the society around them with honesty and sensitivity. Their words offer readers a vivid window into the everyday lives of young people in Okayama-a region known in Japan as a land shaped by old myths and quiet folktales, where gentle urban life blends with the calm of the countryside, mountains stand like patient guardians, orchards rest in soft light, and the Seto Inland Sea lends the landscape a reflective calm. The aim of this book is to bring these diverse voices to a wider audience and to deepen global understanding of Japan-not only through its industries, landscapes, or traditions, but through the thoughts and experiences of its youth. We hope that children, educators, and all those who remain young at heart will find encouragement and insight in this collection, shaped by more than half a century of dedicated efforts to foster expressive writing as a form of personal growth and learning.

Okayama Teachers' Union: - ADACHI Reito, President of Kurashiki City College and a specialist in translation studies and language education, supervised both Volume 1: Essays by Elementary School Students and Volume 2 of the English edition of Okayamakko. His aim was to ensure that the voices and sensibilities of the young authors were faithfully conveyed. As head of the college's translation group, he worked closely with fellow faculty members, local English teachers, and dedicated community volunteers to bring these works to life in English.
