Anglophone Literature from Northeast India and Women’s Writing examines the literary works published in English that gauge the society, culture, norms and values of the region. The themes analysed fall within the larger framework of Indian literature in English, regional and cultural studies.

Through this work, an attempt has been made to bring to the fore the history of Anglophone literature in Northeast India as it puts into perspective why and how English as a language became the vehicle of creative writing. It focuses on the representation of women and familial cultures, particularly the gendered enclosure of women as subalterns. These women are not only subjugated by patriarchy but are also victims of collateral damage in the conflict between the state and sub-national forces. Despite the state’s provisions for constitutional safeguards for women, the rigid patriarchal customary laws and violence continue to batter and shape the lives of women in Northeast India.

In recent times, with the publication of many important Anglophone and vernacular fictional works addressing the ‘women question’, this book shall help in contextualising the socio-political mores of the time.
