Emerging Trends in the New Historical Fiction of India aims to unravel the intricacies and nuances of the literary movement by examining key works that exemplify its defining characteristics. It tries to analyse the shifts in ideas, ideologies/counter-ideologies and the methods to handle the structures of hegemonic ideology with regard to history and historiography. It attempts at the comparative and contrastive analysis of fictions in English, Hindi and Punjabi. The novelists chosen in this study for the analysis of syncretism in the new historiographic fiction are Amitav Ghosh (English), Manmohan Bawa (Punjabi), and Alka Saraogi (Hindi). Two novels by each novelist have been brought under scrutiny. Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies and River of Smoke, Manmohan Bawa’s Yudh Naad and Yug Antt, and Alka Saraogi’s Shesh Kadambari and Kali-Katha: via Bypass have been comparatively and contrastively analysed for gauging the most immediate tendencies, perspectives and ideas taking shape in the social psychology. The primary concern of this book lies in recognizing the change in the human attitude towards knowing the past and history through the analysis of the most immediate affective expression of such change in the contemporary historiographic metafiction.
As the narrative unfolds, readers are taken on a thought-provoking journey through the transformation of postmodern attitudes toward history and its metamorphosis into new theoretical forms, which are yet to be fully explored. By shedding light on these evolving literary trends, the book offers a valuable resource for students and enthusiasts of literature and social sciences, enriching their understanding of India's changing collective and cultural psyche. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper insight into the evolving landscape of Indian historical fiction and its profound impact on society.
