Flowing Genre: Travelogues on the Ganga and the Narmada explores the canonicity of the hitherto minor genre of literature—travelogues—the establishment of which was delayed due to family resemblances with other genres as well as its complex nature. Paying close attention to its development, the book draws a trajectory of travelogue through various ages in English and Gujarati literature through overlapping critical theories of the ‘other’ and gender. It attempts to understand how travel writing evokes distant cultures and interesting locales by surveying some of the most celebrated travelogues on the Indian rivers—the Ganga and the Narmada—by famous Indian and foreign writers. By exploring themes of riverine culture and its development, it discusses the social, political, religious and ecological issues surrounding the rivers, their communities and their sustenance, as well as the concept of veneration versus assault of the river. The book assesses riverine life and literature, offering a foundational starting point for upcoming trends in the genre of travel writing for students, researchers and travel enthusiasts.
