Basavaraj Naikar (1949— ), M.A., Ph.D., D.Litt. (California) is Professor and Chairman, Department of English at Karnatak University, Dharwad, Karnataka, India. A creative writer, translator and bilingual scholar, he has written both in Kannada and English. His publications in Kannada include Paduvana Nadina Premavira, Huchchuhole, Kollada Neralu, Jogibhavi, Govardhanaram, Nigudha Saudha, Asangata, Kannada Asangata Natakagalu, Vatsalya, Samrachanavada, Beowulf, Gilgamesh Mahakavya and Bharatiya English Sahitya Charitre. His English publications include Sarvajna : The Poet Omniscient of Karnataka, Musings of Sarvajna, Critical Articles on Nirad C. Chaudhuri, Shakespeare's Last Plays : A Study in Epic Affirmation, The Folk-Theatre of North Karnataka, Sparrows, Sandalwood, Kanakadasa, Sangya-Balya, The Fall of Kalyana and several articles and reviews in various Indian and foreign journals. His The Thief of Nagarahalli and Other Stories was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Fiction Prize for the Best First Book from Eurasia in 2000. His other short story collections and novels await publication. He reviews Indian literary works regularly for World Literature Today, (Oklahoma, USA). His research interests include Shakespeare Studies, Indian English Literature, Anglo-Indian Literature, Commonwealth Literature and Translation Studies.
