The recluse of Amherst, Emily Dickinson was one of the most original writers of nineteenth century America. Her brevity, compactness, conciseness, riddles, irony, ambiguity, epithets, hyperboles, new words coined by her, all have helped to change her style with life. She wrote of God, Man and Nature and knew Love and Death intimately as few ever did. This critical evaluation of her poems according to the thematic pattern reveals Emily Dickinson’s honest efforts at reconciling the finite with the infinite without sacrificing the integrity of the human soul. Certainly, the close interpretation of the textual units in this book will promote a better understanding of American poetry in general and Emily Dickinson’s poetry in particular. Since poems of Emily Dickinson are prescribed in the English syllabus of most of the universities of India, both the teachers and the students will find the book extremely useful, and the general readers, interested in poetry and themes like Death, Love, Life, Nature, etc. will find it stimulating and refreshing.
