Hartland Forest: A Legend of North Devon is a novel written by Anna Eliza Bray and published in 1871. The story takes place in the 16th century in the forest of Hartland, located in the county of Devon, England. The novel follows the life of a young girl named Cicely, who lives with her father in a small cottage in the forest. Cicely's father is a forester who works for the lord of the manor, Sir Hugh de Courtenay. As Cicely grows up, she becomes aware of the harsh realities of life in the forest. She witnesses the cruelty of the lord's gamekeeper, who kills animals indiscriminately, and the suffering of the poor people who live in the forest. Cicely's father tries to protect her from these harsh realities, but she is determined to make a difference in the lives of those around her. One day, Cicely meets a mysterious stranger in the forest who tells her about a legendary figure known as the ""Green Man"". The Green Man is said to be a symbol of hope and renewal, and Cicely becomes convinced that he can help her bring about positive change in the forest. The novel explores themes of social justice, environmentalism, and the power of myth and legend. It also offers a vivid portrayal of life in rural England during the Tudor period.
