Humaira Raza commits suicide hours after she's betrothed to the man she loves. The suicide note left by her has a cryptic part, which holds the key to her death. Shocked, Turab Raza, her lover, sets out to unravel the mystery enveloping her death. In his quest, he is introduced to a maverick man named Murshid, who claims he can help him speak to Humaira's spirit. At Murshid's behest, Turab performs a nocturnal ritual at his lady's grave. Will Turab be able to speak to Humaira's spirit and thus pull the lid off her death; or will the mystery get even murkier?

Elsewhere, a young man meets the country's ace comedian named Sharmila and narrates to him a story, which leaves him in a cold sweat. Sharmila, who has an enviable present, has a dark past and is desperate to keep it hidden. At the same time, he is curious to know how that stranger got a wink of the sordid affair, as everyone else privy to that is long dead.

Other principal characters in the novel include Prof Zamir Naqvi, whose inquisitiveness about his favourite student springs up on him the shock of his life; Haroon Bashir, a billionaire playboy, who relishes hobnobbing with and then abandoning women until he falls in love with someone who isn't inclined to reciprocate; Zahida Ansari, a school teacher who leads a miserable but defiant life; and Shandana Afridi, who relentlessly seeks Turab's love and who scruples at nothing in her pursuit.

Is suffering an inescapable fact of life? Is death the only antidote to suffering? Does suicide represent an affirmation or denial of the will to live? Is life the most damned thing in the universe? Is light or darkness the gateway to truth? Questions such as these constitute the common thread which binds all the characters.
