The benefits of a greenhouse are obvious and compelling: relief from winter's darkness; year-found gardening; a weather-proof space for basking and relaxing at any time of year; passive solar heating. But what about the costs? Of construction, of heating, of keeping the whole thing going? The thesis of this book will be that these costs can be minimized with very little sacrifice of the benefits by turning solely to the sun for heat, with no reliance whatsoever on fossil fuels. In it you will find a wonderful range of plants that will indeed bloom in this unlikely time of year.

James Jones has gardened for 25 years in a greenhouse heated solely by solar energy, converted from one that relied on fossil fuel. His publications include two books: Greenhouse Plants, Ortho Press, 1989, and Lychnis and Silene in the Garden, NARGS (North American Rock Garden Society) Press, 1999, as well as a number of articles, primarily in Horticulture. He has given many slide lectures over the years about greenhouses and other aspects of gardening. He often judges at the Boston Flower Show. He is a member of several horticultural societies and is a past president of the North American Rock Garden Society. He lives with his wife, Deborah Y. Beers-Jones, in a suburb of Boston, Massachusetts.
