Das letzte Drittel des fünften Jahrhunderts v. Chr. stellt eine wichtige Epoche in der Geschichte der Rhetorik dar. Nachdem sie möglicherweise in Sizilien aufgekommen war, wurde die Rhetorik durch die Sophisten in Athen gelehrt und verbreitet, wo das Interesse an Redefähigkeiten durch Neuerungen in Politik und Gerichtswesen stark gestiegen war. Auf Grund der Quellenlage ist das Wissen über Einzelheiten des Redeunterrichts jener Zeit allerdings äu erst spärlich, was zu sehr divergierenden Einschätzungen in der Forschung geführt hat. Im vorliegenden Buch wird daher eine in diesem Zusammenhang bisher nicht genutzte Informationsquelle systematisch erschlossen: Die aus dem ausgehenden fünften Jahrhundert erhaltenen schriftlichen Werke - Dramen, Geschichtsschreibung und Gerichtsreden - werden auf Äu erungen zum Thema Überreden/Überzeugen (griech. peithein) hin ausgewertet, um über das rhetorische Reflexionsniveau der Zeit Aufschlu zu gewinnen. Denn jene Texte enthalten eine Fülle von Überlegungen zur Person des Redners, zu Publikumspsychologie, Gefühlsstrategien und rationalen Mitteln der Rede (Argumenten, Belegen usw.). Darüber hinaus lassen diese Überlegungen erkennen, da der Überzeugungsproze bereits damals als ein analysierbarer und beeinflu barer Vorgang verstanden wurde.
