Da sich Definitartikel aus Demonstrativa herleiten, ist wohlbekannt. Aber wie man sich diesen Proze genau vorzustellen hat, ist weitgehend unklar. Dieses Buch entwickelt zu diesem Thema eine Reihe von Hypothesen, die auf der empirischen Basis eines breiten Samples von über 80 Sprachen diskutiert werden. Diskussionsschwerpunkte sind u.a. Deutsch (Umgangsdeutsch und Dialekte), Englisch, Tagalog und Indonesisch; aber auch für die vieldiskutierte Artikelentwicklung in der Romania werden neue Perspektiven eröffnet. Zentral ist die Hypothese, da in diesem Proze nicht nur ein grammatisches Element (ein Artikel), sondern auch eine grammatische Konstruktion (eine NP) entsteht. Es wird gezeigt, da syntaktische Struktur (syntaktische Kategorien, Konstituentenstruktur) ebenso ein Produkt von Grammatikalisierungsprozessen ist wie ein grammatisches Element. Damit werden hier erstmals detaillierte Vorschläge für die syntaktische Seite von Grammatikalisierungsprozessen, die in der grammatikalisierungstheoretischen Literatur bisher kaum beachtet wurde, unterbreitet.

Neben dem Definitartikel wird eine gro e Anzahl weiterer Artikelphänomene behandelt (z.B. der Gelenkartikel) und eine neue Typologie für Artikel vorgeschlagen. Auch der Gebrauch von Demonstrativa ist Gegenstand einer eingehenden Untersuchung, da es den Ausgangspunkt der Entwicklung von Artikeln so genau wie möglich zu identifizieren gilt. Im Gegensatz zur weitverbreiteten Annahme, Artikel entwickelten sich aus dem anaphorischen Gebrauch von Demonstrativa, wird dafür argumentiert, da ein bisher nur selten bemerkter, aber universal attestierter Gebrauch von Demonstrativa, der anamnestische Gebrauch, ein weitaus plausiblerer Ausgangspunkt ist.
