Wilhelm Heinses Roman Ardinghello und die glückseligen Inseln (1787) wird von der gegenwärtigen Literaturwissenschaft überwiegend als Marginalie behandelt: Er gilt als formal defizitär, als theorieüberladen und literaturgeschichtlich kaum zu verorten. Leonhard Herrmann zeigt, dass Heinses Roman gerade in dieser Beschaffenheit als Ausdruck eines philosophisch-literarischen Experiments zu betrachten ist: das empirische Individuum als vollkommen frei von allen sozialen und metaphysischen Determinanten zu denken. Dies unterscheidet ihn erheblich von vergleichbaren deutschsprachigen Werken seiner Zeit und lässt ihn - wie im Rahmen einer rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Analyse deutlich wird - immer wieder zum Gegenstand begeisterter Lektüren werden. Noch im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts wird versucht, den Roman in den entstehenden, Klassiker'-Kanon zu integrieren - ein Versuch, der schlie lich an den Differenzen zu den, klassischen' Werken Goethes und Schillers scheitert. Um 1900 wird Heinses Roman daher zum Klassiker jenseits der Klassik. Aus diesen Ergebnissen leitet die Studie generalisierbare Annahmen zur Theorie literarischer Kanones ab: Diese gelten als komplexe Systeme äu erer wie innerer Bezüge, die bei jedem Versuch der Inklusion berücksichtigt werden müssen.
