Johanns von Würzburg "Wilhelm von Österreich" gehört zu den späthöfischen mittelhochdeutschen Romanen, die lange Zeit mi verstanden worden sind. Er wird hier erstmals in seinem literarhistorischen Kontext betrachtet, als ein Werk, das an der Schwelle zwischen dem Untergang des höfischen Romans und dem Triumph der didaktischen Kleinepik und Allegorie sowie am Gipfelpunkt der Historisierung höfischer Dichtung steht. Die Verfasserin versteht ihn als ein literarisches Experiment und untersucht, wie Johann in der Motivik, der Erzählhaltung und der Struktur seines Werks Elemente der Minnerede, des höfischen Romans und der Geschichtsschreibung verbindet und aufeinandersto en lä t, um die Gattungsmischung erkenntlich zu machen. Ein Vergleich mit Ulrichs "Frauendienst", dem "Jüngeren Titurel", dem "Reinfrid von Braunschweig" und Wittenwilers "Ring" verdeutlicht schlie lich die Einzigartigkeit der Gattungsmischung bei Johann, die über eine schlichte Integration gattungsfremder Elemente in einen Roman weit hinausgeht: Johann schafft eine neue Romanstruktur, die Lehre und Handlung aufeinander bezieht und der Minnedidaxe wie dem Fürstenpreis dient. Den Abschlu der Untersuchung bildet eine Analyse der Rezeption des Werks im 14.-16. Jahrhundert, von der Handschriftentradition über die Prosaisierung und Hans Sachs' Tragödie bis hin zu Erwähnungen des "Wilhelm" in anderen Werken, v.a. bei Hermann von Sachsenheim. Die Gattungsmischung ist offensichtlich von den frühen Rezipienten erkannt und z.T. als störend empfunden und bereinigt worden. Im Anhang finden sich die bisher unedierte "Liebesklage" (Brandis 40) und der vollständige Zyklus der Holzschnitte aus dem Augsburger Prosadruck von 1481.
