Die Untersuchung bezieht zu zwei zentralen Streitpunkten der Skriptaforschung Stellung: zur Frage nach dem Verhältnis zwischen der geschrieben überlieferten und der lokal gesprochenen Sprache und zum methodologischen Zugang. Der Verfasser zieht aus der Betrachtung der skriptologischen Methodengeschichte den Schlu , da die Kombinierung quantitativer und qualitativer Ansätze möglich und sinnvoll ist. Er schlägt deshalb eine untersuchungsperspektivische Erweiterung in Anlehnung an die Varietätenlinguistik vor. Der eigens entwickelte "historisch-varietätenlinguistische" Ansatz wird am Beispiel der altfranzösischen Negation und Substantivflexion in 179 luxemburgischen Originalurkunden umgesetzt. Zu den Belegen werden au er- und innersprachliche Informationen zusammengestellt (qualitativer Aspekt). Diese Daten werden so kategorisiert, da sie statistisch ausgewertet werden können (quantitativer Aspekt). Es ergibt sich, da die in den Texten nachgewiesene sprachliche Variation nicht allein mit geographischen, sondern auch mit soziokulturellen Faktoren korreliert. Dies hat nicht zuletzt Bedeutung für einen weiteren Aspekt der französischen Sprachgeschichte: Während bisher die Entstehung der neufranzösischen Standardsprache vornehmlich auf diatopischer Basis (Paris) diskutiert wurde, eröffnet der historisch-varietätenlinguistische Ansatz die Möglichkeit, auch die Rolle anderer diasystematischer Faktoren bei der Ausbildung eines sprachlichen Standards empirisch zu untersuchen.
