"Zeichen und Zeit" benennt wesentliche Komponenten der Realitätskonzeption realistischer Literatur des 19. Jahrhunderts: Ihre Zeichenkonzeption wird an Texten ablesbar, die die Produktion und Rezeption von Bildwerken als gefährlich phantasieren und deren Ähnlichkeit mit dem Abgebildeten als eine Gewinn-Verlust-Beziehung konzipieren, in der das Bezeichnete an Leben verliert, was das Zeichen an täuschender Mimesis gewinnt. Realistische Mimesis droht im Extremfall, ihren Gegenstand zu tilgen und in der blo en Realität der Zeichen zu münden. Damit verknüpft ist eine literarische Zeit- und Geschichtskonzeption, die sich mit dem semiotischen Problem konfrontiert sieht, motivierte Repräsentanten für absente Realitäten, für individuelle oder kollektive Vergangenheit zu (er-)finden. Dieser Zusammenhang wird als latente Problemkonstellation für ein grö eres Korpus von Erzähltexten zwischen 1840 und 1910 - nicht nur für Künstlernovellen oder Geschichstromane - rekonstruiert. Exemplarische Analysen der semantischen Feinstruktur von Texten Storms, Fontanes, Sacher-Masochs u.a. werden dabei auf diskursgeschichtliche Erkenntnisinteressen verpflichtet. Da der Realismus sprachliche gegen bildliche, metonymische gegen metaphorische Zeichen ausspielt und die Gefahren visueller Imagination permanent beschwört, erweist sich am Ende des Jahrhunderts als indirekte Selbstreferentialität der Literatur angesichts zunehmender Medienkonkurrenz: Am Beginn des Zeitalters des Film stö t realistische Literatur explizit an ihre psychologischen und phantastischen Grenzen.
