Questa storia-insegnamento � ben nota nel folklore greco, ma questa versione � attribuita allo sceicco Mohamed Jamaludin di Adrianopoli (l'odierna Edirne) in Turchia, morto nel 1750. Fu pubblicata per la prima volta da Idries Shah nel 1967 nella sua opera classica, "Racconti dei Dervisci, Storie-insegnamento dei Maestri Sufi negli ultimi mille anni".

Nella tradizione sufi esiste un continuum tra la storia per bambini, la storia di intrattenimento o folcloristica e la storia didattica o strumentale.
