Después de la muerte de su mamá, la familia migró a la ciudad fronteriza de Mexicali, en Baja California. Alberto duró la época de los 1950s y 1960s trabajando como un barbero. En el verano de 1968, el autor entró a los Estados Unidos. No es claro si tenía permiso de la administración presidencial del tiempo o no, pero siempre vino porque tenía ganas.
