It's another mundane Signal Intelligence mission for the Blackthorn, a Confederation Deep Space Survey Ship whose patrol area is situated in the Terran southern pole region of interstellar space, an area encompassing the constellations of the Ara/Parvo star groupings.

The bored crew, led by Captain McClintock, responds to an urgent call from the Sophistry's Time Minister, causing them to violate their mission boundaries. They render assistance to a huge, damaged vessel called the Nth Degree, a time ship that has been set upon by six warships of the Morritite Federation.

Blasting two ships to pieces, they are captured and "encouraged" to repair a ship so it can return to their own time. With the extensive repairs completed, McClintock and his crew are ordered to use their vessel to "seal a hole in space" so it will remain sealed once the ship departs their time. In a no-win situation, the captain agrees.

What consequences will befall the Blackthorn's crew, and how will their actions affect their lives?
