In "Sins of the Fire," readers were introduced to Kane, a college student whose life takes a turn when he discovers a pen containing the soul of Mysherra, an ancient dragon. Mysherra fought in the Crusades thousands of years ago, when dragons and humans were once allies. Her past is shrouded in mystery, from her appearance now to her existence as a weapon. Deeply troubled by the implications of magic, dragons, and alternative history being reality, Kane struggles to keep Mysherra a secret, until he is confronted by the mysterious Remnants that appear as angels before him, seeking to capture Mysherra. Anxious of failure, Kane must learn to manage his hesitations, as the leader of the Remnants, Noah, seeks the destruction of all dragon kind for reasons that are beyond Kane's understanding. The beginning of the story prepares for the second story's plot, as Noah will stop at nothing to gain Mysherra.

Kane's choices are what defines his next actions, though his anxiety prevents him from making decisions rooted in logical thought. Mysherra eventually recognizes his fear and provides Kane a valuable piece of advice that drives the theme of the series; failure does not define a person's legacy--it is what's done after the consequence of it.
